often dreamed of her son, a dream long and complex, full of excitement and joy, a dream where that child lying lifeless on a hospital bed became large and talked to him about baseball, girls, went to college and took its path, a path away from crime. Sometimes his dreams were so vivid that when she woke up really believed that, turning on its side, while the first rays of sun filtering through the shutters, he felt his feet tramping down the corridor to reach the room mom and dad.
But then she opened her eyes. It did not feel anything but the dawn.
